Holiday Activities and Food Programme Launches Sessions across Leicester-Shire

Leicestershire County Council, Barnardo's, Voluntary Action Leicestershire and Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport have secured significant funding from the Department for Education, to deliver a Holiday Activities and Food programme for Leicestershire, to take place over the summer of 2019.

Following a grant opportunity there are now over 25 suppliers who will be operating holiday programmes across Leicester-Shire, with a number of providers now starting their booking processes for these programmes.

The Programmes will provide free places for those Leicestershire pupils who are eligible for free school meals*, allowing them access up to 4 hours of activity for 4 hours a day for 4 weeks of the summer. A healthy meal will be available each day.

The aim is for children who attend this provision, and where appropriate, their parents who attend is to ensure children eat more healthily over the summer, are more active, have the opportunity to take part in engaging and enriching activities which support the development and resilience, character and wellbeing and have greater knowledge of health and nutrition.

Nadine Good, Assistant Director for Barnardo's, said: "We are very pleased to be given the opportunity to co-ordinate this important programme across Leicestershire.

"Barnardo's work every day to make sure disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people get the opportunities and support that all children should have. We hope that via partnership working this funding will make sure that eligible children can have enjoyable and educational activities this summer."

The programme is being hosted by a number of different organisations and venues across Leicester-shire, including charities and other third sector organisations, as well as existing holiday club providers. Local schools have also got involved with the programme and will also be hosting holiday activities over the summer period.
